5 Ways to Serve Even When It is Hard

To build disciples, one of the things that my team and I have to do over and over again is talk with people about serving others in the name of Jesus.  We always need servants.  We need servants in the church.  We need servants in our communities doing things in the name of Jesus.  Over the years I have seen churches try all sorts of techniques and tricks to get people to serve.  I have even tried a few of them.

We ask questions like:

  • What can we do to make serving easier?
  • What can we do to make serving convenient for people?
  • What can we do to make it fun so that everyone will want to do it?

and we come up with new ways to make things easy, convenient and fun and here in lies the problem.

Does serving need to be easy?  Yes.  Can it be convenient?  Yep.  Should it be fun?  It can be.  But is easy, convenient and fun going to lead people to serve?  Not always.  There's more to it than that.  Developing servants and building teams requires that we remind people that serving requires sacrifice, but the sacrifice is worth it.  Even when it's not easy, it is worth it.  Even if its inconvenient, it's worth it.  Even if is not fun (at the time), it is worth it.  Bottom line, the sacrifice for serving Jesus is worth it.
