Series Focus: Spend time with God to be more like Jesus
Use this guide to lead your family. In each guide, you will find a parenting affirmation to help you focus on God's call on you as a parent/guardian. Then, you will find a Scripture passage from the New International Reader's Version of the Bible. When you are done reading, there are discussion questions to help your family talk about what you read. Feel free to add to or skip questions as time allows. At some point during the week, it would be extra special to plan to do the optional Family Activity.
Parenting Affirmation: God is using parenthood to make me more like Jesus. Read Isaiah 48:10-11
Read: 12 When Jesus finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes. Then he returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord.’ You are right. That is what I am. 14 I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet. So you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have given you an example. You should do as I have done for you. 16 What I’m about to tell you is true. A slave is not more important than his master. And a messenger is not more important than the one who sends him. 17 Now you know these things. So you will be blessed if you do them. John 13:12-17
Discussion Questions:
Let’s read a little bit more together. Someone read John 13:1-12.
Jesus washed his disciple’s feet. Which one of us would do that for everyone in our family?
Why would you want to wash their feet? Why wouldn’t you want to wash their feet?
John 13 shows us what it means to serve people. Sometimes that is not based on what we prefer or how we feel about it. Jesus gives the example by modeling serving his disciples, the people closest to Him.
In what ways can we serve each other in our family?
Serving is important, but the heart behind why we serve is just as important. What should we focus on as we serve each other?
How can we serve others individually or as a family?
Family Activity: Help everyone find a way they can serve someone in the family this week. After each person serves, talk about the response of the person they served and what the act of service did for the family member who served.
