In the Relationship Restart series, we are breaking some bad habits and building some new ones to love to people closest to me as Jesus has loved me.
Use this guide to lead your family. In each guide, you will find a parenting affirmation to help you focus on God's call on you as a parent/guardian. Then, you will find a Scripture passage from the New International Reader's Version of the Bible. When you are done reading, there are discussion questions to help your family talk about what you read. Feel free to add to or skip questions as time allows. At some point during the week, it would be extra special to plan to do the optional Family Activity.
Parenting Affirmation: God sees and appreciates the work I do as a parent. (Genesis 16:13, Proverbs 15:3)
Read Matthew 5:38-42.
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye must be put out for an eye. A tooth must be knocked out for a tooth.’ (Exodus 21:24; Leviticus 24:20; Deuteronomy 19:21) 39 But here is what I tell you. Do not fight against an evil person. Suppose someone slaps you on your right cheek. Turn your other cheek to them also. 40 Suppose someone takes you to court to get your shirt. Let them have your coat also. 41 Suppose someone forces you to go one mile. Go two miles with them. 42 Give to the one who asks you for something. Don’t turn away from the one who wants to borrow something from you. Matthew 5:38-42
Discussion Questions:
In all our relationships we can act in love, honor each other, forgive and give grace, let our yes be yes and our no be no, and be kind.
Family Activity: Pray together for each person’s relationships. Pray for God to show each of you ways you can grow in the skills we have learned about this month. Where can you encourage each person in ways you have seen them grow in their relationship with God or others? Where do they need help focusing on Jesus and sharing Him with others?
