Salt & Light

PARENTING AFFIRMATION
The work of parenting is honorable, righteous, and significant.  Colossians 3:23, 1 Peter 4:10-11

READ MATTHEW 5:13-16
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But suppose the salt loses its saltiness. How can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything. It will be thrown out. People will walk all over it.
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill can’t be hidden. 15 Also, people do not light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand. Then it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine so others can see it. Then they will see the good things you do. And they will bring glory to your Father who is in heaven.  Matthew 5:13-16

DISCUSS IT
  • Who likes to eat salt?  All by itself, who likes salt?  Why/why not?
  • Have you ever tried to eat your favorite meal without salt in it?  What did it taste like?  Was it the same?
  • Does anyone know what salt is best at doing?  (preserving things)
  • Talk about things you know are preserved by salt (need help, ask google )
  • What does preserving and salt have to do with being more like Jesus?
  • How about light?  What does light have to do with Jesus?
  • How can this help you live more like Jesus this week?

FAMILY ACTIVITY
Play flashlight tag.  Think tag and hide-and-seek in the dark. Flashlight tag's rules vary, but the basic premise is one person is "it" and tries to spot his or her friends hiding in the dark by using the flashlight.  All you need is one working flashlight.  When you are done, ask kids how this could help them remember Jesus is Salt and Light?
