Great Faith

PARENTING AFFIRMATION
God’s grace is greater than my parenting mistakes.  Proverbs 19:21

READ IT
5 When Jesus entered Capernaum, a Roman commander came to him. He asked Jesus for help. 6 “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home and can’t move. He is suffering terribly.”  7 Jesus said, “Shall I come and heal him?”
8 The commander replied, “Lord, I am not good enough to have you come into my house. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 I myself am a man under authority. And I have soldiers who obey my orders. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes. I tell that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. He said to those following him, “What I’m about to tell you is true. In Israel I have not found anyone whose faith is so strong. 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west. They will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of heaven. They will sit with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 12 But those who think they belong in the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness. There they will weep and grind their teeth.”  13 Then Jesus said to the Roman commander, “Go! It will be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that moment.  Matthew 8:5-13

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
  • What kind of things is it easy for you to have faith/trust in? (feelings, words, objects, people, circumstances)
  • In the passage we read above, who showed great faith? (The Centurion) Why? (He believed Jesus words were most powerful.)
  • Read Hebrews 11:6 together.  In Hebrews 11 we see a long list of people who lived by faith.  In verse 6; What does it say shows great faith? (Following Jesus,.)
  • It takes faith to believe in Jesus and it takes faith to follow Jesus every day.
  • How many of us believe in Jesus?  How many of us want to follow Jesus every day?  How can we encourage each other to live both of these?

FAMILY ACTIVITY
Gather several of the same object together in a pile.  (stuffed animals, balls, plastic dishes)  Create two circles on the table/floor with a hula hoop or masking tape.  Help kids decide which circle is greater than and which is less than by putting different numbers of objects in each circle.  Play several rounds.  Figuring out what is greater helps us know what is important.  Most of the time, the greater the amount the greater the importance.  Like with cookies, is it better to have one or 5 cookies for snack?  When we consider great faith, what kind of things do we need to have great faith in?  (God’s character, God’s promises, The Bible)  What kind of things is it ok to not have as much faith in?  (feelings, circumstances)  How can we pray for each other to grow in faith?
