PARENTING AFFIRMATION
God’s grace is greater than my parenting mistakes.  Proverbs 19:21

READ IT
22 Right away Jesus made the disciples get into the boat. He had them go on ahead of him to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. Then he sent the crowd away. 23 After he had sent them away, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone. 24 The boat was already a long way from land. It was being pounded by the waves because the wind was blowing against it. 25 Shortly before dawn, Jesus went out to the disciples. He walked on the lake. 26 They saw him walking on the lake and were terrified. “It’s a ghost!” they said. And they cried out in fear.

27 Right away Jesus called out to them, “Be brave! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 28 “Lord, is it you?” Peter asked. “If it is, tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 “Come,” Jesus said. So Peter got out of the boat. He walked on the water toward Jesus. 30 But when Peter saw the wind, he was afraid. He began to sink. He cried out, “Lord! Save me!” 31 Right away Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “Your faith is so small!” he said. “Why did you doubt me?” 32 When they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those in the boat worshiped Jesus. They said, “You really are the Son of God!”  Matthew 14:22-33

DISCUSS IT
The disciples are out in a boat on the Sea of Galilee. Jesus is watching them and He decided to go toward them by walking on water.  Peter sees Jesus and asks to join Him.  As long as Peter keeps His eyes on Jesus he can walk on water.
  • What part of this story shows great faith?
  • What part of this story do we see what little faith looks like?
  • How did Jesus help Peter? (reached out his hand and corrected Him with His words)
  • Is there a part of this story that really sticks out to you?  What and Why?
  • What can you do this week to fix your eyes on Jesus so that you live with great faith?

FAMILY ACTIVITY
Lay a pool noodle or long piece of wood on the ground.  Give each person a chance to cross the noodle/board walking on their tip toes.  Then have each person cross the noodle or board backwards.  After each person has had a chance to cross the board, ask them to talk about what they had to concentrate on to be successful at this task.  Did they watch the board/noodle the whole way?  Did they look across the room at a focal point?  Did they close their eyes and focus on the feeling of the board under their feet?  Who was this easiest for?  Who had the hardest time?  Can you relate to Peter or Jesus?  How can we face our fear in a different way that shows us and others around us that we have great faith?
