PARENTING AFFIRMATIONS
I love being a parent. Psalms 128, I make my home a haven for my kids. Romans 12:18, Galatians 5:22-23

35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” Mark 4:35-41

FAMILY ACTIVITY
Create a family motto. You can use scripture (Psalm 73:26 is a good one) or other encouraging words to help each other know what to focus on when you are filled with fear. Pray together and work together creating a short 2 sentence max motto that helps everyone not be afraid and discouraged.

- What kinds of things are you afraid of? (be honest)
- Have you ever been in a storm that frightened you? Why were you so frightened?
- In this story today I want to draw a picture for you. The Sea of Galilee is not a large body of water. It is actually quite small. You can see from shore to shore all the way across the Sea. There are hilltops surrounding the Sea. When the weather is nice the water is very calm, not even causing waves. When the weather is bad, because of the hilltops, the water gets real rough very quickly. It is not unusual for a big storm to come out of nowhere. Does this change your view of this story? It did for me when I visited the Sea of Galilee. I never understood the terror the disciples experienced. Big waves, rocking boat, and sleeping Jesus would terrify me, too. The disciples question, do you not care that we die, is real.
- Jesus’ response is where we should focus though. He rebuked the wind and waves and said Be still! Jesus had the authority to make that happen.
- Fear of Man and failure are common for adults. What are your kids afraid of? How can God help us overcome these fears and focus on Him more?
