Doctrine of the Holy Spirit

This Summer, I am challenging the church to have an uncommon summer as we seek the Lord, serve the Lord, and have fun together.  Because our beliefs impact our lives and how we live is determined by what we believe, we are teaching through the core doctrines of our church. We are digging deep into our faith to live it fully.

This Sunday, I challenged the church to live in a relationship with the Holy Spirit because as believers, the Spirit lives in us and is giving us the power to live Godly lives.  Paul commanded the church to keep in step with the Spirit in Galatians 5 was he penned, "Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit."  But how do we do this?  How do we live by the Spirit and keep in step with Him?

  1. Remember that the Spirit is always with you and is always working in you.  There is nothing you are doing and nowhere you are going that the Spirit of God isn't with you.   You don't have to go to a specific place or specific person for God to work in you because the Spirit lives in you!

15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[c] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. JOHN 14:15-18

  2. Pray for the Spirit to teach you, empower you for ministry, and to encourage you as a son or daughter of God.  Praying to the Spirit is one of the ways that we pray in the Spirit as Scripture commands.  Before you read Scripture, pray that the Spirit would teach you.  As you face, tough moments, pray that the Spirit would personally minister to you.  As you need courage and boldness to serve the Lord, pray that the Spirit would embolden you just like He did the disciples.

26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.  JOHN 14:26-27

  3. Listen to and obey the Spirit's leading.  As the Spirit convicts you, adjust your life and lifestyle.  As the Spirit prompts you to help someone, serve someone or share your faith with someone, do what He prompts you to do.  He will always lead you into God's perfect will for your life so tune your ear to the voice of the Spirit.  Reading the Bible consistently will give the Spirit more vocabulary to use in your life so dig into God's Word and be ready to hear from God.

19 Do not quench the Spirit.  1 THESSALONIANS 5:19

  4. Test the spirits.  The Bible warns us to test the spirits that we are listening to and the teachers we are following. Test the "spirit's promptings" to ensure they are in line with God's Word because the Spirit of God will never contradict the Word of God.  If you feel like God is telling you to do something that you know is wrong according to the Bible, this is not God leading you.  100% of the time you can know this.

1 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.  1 JOHN 4:1

Morning by morning, submit your life to the Spirit's work.  Surrender your life to His leadership and then watch Him move in your life and direct your steps!
