Integrity of Heart

When God looks at our heart, what does He look for?  He’s looking for deeply spiritual, genuinely humble, honest-to-the-core servants who have integrity.  David's unwavering integrity in his dealings with Saul serves as a profound example of righteousness and respect for authority.  It’s the type of integrity and respect that is needed today more than ever.

Remember the story of David and Saul, despite Saul's relentless pursuit to end his life, David consistently refrains from harming the king, even when the opportunity presents itself. Why did David refuse to seek revenge?  David had a deep understanding of God's anointing and the sacredness of the king's position, as well as his genuine desire to man of character even in the face of personal danger.

Time and again, David's integrity prevails. In the cave of En Gedi, when Saul unwittingly enters David's hiding place, David chooses not to harm Saul but instead cuts a piece of his robe as a symbolic act. This gesture showcases David's restraint and his refusal to usurp the throne through treachery, highlighting his commitment to God's timing and the principles of honor and humility.  But even this act was troubling to David.  He didn’t kill the king, but he dishonored him and David was not OK with that.  He could have done so much more, but he didn’t rationalize his sin.  He owned it and even confessed it to Saul.

David resisted revenge and refused to rationalize His sins.

David's behavior extends beyond the physical realm. When he has the opportunity to mock or belittle Saul, he instead maintains respect and humility. He refrains from viewing Saul as an enemy to be derided, recognizing Saul's position as God's chosen king, despite Saul's descent into jealousy and irrationality. David's commitment to integrity in both action and attitude underscores his deep faith in God's sovereignty and his determination to honor God's plan, even when faced with adversity and personal animosity.

As you dig into the story of David and Saul, know that there is no excuse or rationalization for sins of the hand, head, or heart.  Also, know that God’s timing of our lives can always be trusted.  Sometimes, people lose their integrity to get what they want when they want it.  David’s life sets the example of doing the opposite.  Trust God’s timing and trust God’s process for you!
