I Have a Future and a Hope for You

Imagine driving on a familiar road when thick fog suddenly rolls in. The road, which once felt safe and predictable, is now uncertain. You can only see a few feet ahead. Do you stop, afraid to move forward? Do you inch ahead cautiously, unsure of what’s next? Or do you rush ahead blindly, hoping for the best?

Many of us feel this way about the future—uncertain, anxious, and afraid of what we can’t see. We wonder: What will happen next? Will everything work out? Am I really in control?
Here’s the truth: Our future may be uncertain, but God’s promises are sure. The Bible reassures us that God is working in every season of our lives. Even when we can’t see the way forward, He is guiding our steps.

1. God Knows Your Future
"Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." — Psalm 139:16

We often fear the unknown because we don’t know what’s coming next. But God does. He is never surprised by anything that happens in our lives. He sees the full picture, while we only see a small part.

Think of a chess grandmaster—he sees several moves ahead, anticipating every possible outcome. Even if the opponent makes a move he didn’t expect, the grandmaster already has a strategy in place. That’s how God works in our lives. Even when things don’t go as we planned, He already has a way forward.
Our job isn’t to understand every detail of the future—it’s to trust the One who does.

2. God’s Plan for Your Future Is Good
"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." — Jeremiah 29:11
When we face setbacks, hardships, or disappointments, we might wonder: Is God really for me? The Bible assures us that God’s plans are for our good. But that doesn’t mean everything in life will be easy.

Romans 8:28 is often misunderstood: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Some take this to mean that everything happens for a reason, but in reality, this verse teaches that God is actively working through everything—good and bad—to accomplish His greater purpose in our lives.

Think about Joseph in the Old Testament—he was betrayed by his brothers, falsely accused, and imprisoned. For years, it seemed like nothing good was happening. But later, Joseph could look back and say, “What you meant for evil, God meant for good” (Genesis 50:20). God was working behind the scenes the entire time.
We may not always see how God is working in the moment, but we can trust that He is weaving together something greater than we can imagine.

3. You Must Choose to Trust God
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." — Proverbs 3:5-6
Trusting God with the future isn’t just about believing He has a plan—it’s about actively choosing to follow Him, even when you don’t understand.

Think of a tightrope walker crossing a canyon. A crowd watches in awe as he walks back and forth with ease. Then, he asks, “Do you believe I can push a wheelbarrow across?” The crowd shouts, “Yes!” Then he asks, “Who will get in the wheelbarrow?” Silence.
It’s one thing to say we trust God—it’s another to step into the wheelbarrow. Real trust means surrendering control, following where He leads, and believing He knows what He’s doing.

So how do we live this out?
  • Choose faith over fear. When you’re tempted to worry, remind yourself that God is in control.
  • Let go of control. You don’t have to figure everything out—trust that God already has.
  • Follow where He leads. Even when the path is unclear, God will guide you step by step.

Corrie ten Boom once used the example of a tapestry to describe how God works. If you look at the back of a tapestry, it looks like a mess—knots, tangles, and no clear design. But when you turn it over, a beautiful pattern is revealed.
Right now, you may only see the messy side of your life. But one day, you’ll look back and realize God was weaving something beautiful all along.

You don’t have to see the future to trust the One who holds it. Surrender your fears, trust in His plan, and take the next step in faith. He’s already gone ahead of you.
