What is light the night?

Light the Night is a Church-wide initiative to live our life on Mission on October 31st

October 31st is one of the best opportunities of the year to meet neighbors and shine the light of Christ. Whether people come to your door or you go to theirs, it’s a chance to be present, build relationships, and plant seeds of connection that God can grow into future fruit. Loving our neighbors starts with knowing them, and this night gives us a natural way to begin. Join us as we practice living on mission—right where we are—by turning a simple moment into meaningful impact.

How it works

If You're Staying in

1. Purchase Candy and have it ready at your house

2. Set up a chair, table, or tent in your front yard or driveway

3. Pray and ask God to use the night for conversations and connection

4. Put on our Light the Night Playlist if you have access to a speaker

5. Greet warmly and have organic conversation as you hand out candy

If You're Going Out

1. Take your kit with you  in your candy bag or pocket

2. Share resources with families you meet along the way

3. Pray as you walk between homes, asking God to open doors

4. Create organic conversations with people

5. If you’re visiting friends, teammates, or relatives, be intentional about deepening those relationships

Conversation STarters

Conversation is the catalyst for relational connection. One of the wins of the night is simply having a conversation with someone you don't know. We can't love our neighbor and serve them if we don't know them! You may not be ready for a Gospel conversation, but you can shine a light through hospitality, love and openness to  welcome others.

If you're going out

  • “That’s such a great costume! Let me guess, you are ___!”

  • “Do you guys live in the neighborhood, or are you visiting?”

  • “How’s your night going so far?”

  • “What’s your favorite candy?”

  • “Do your kids go to school nearby?”

  • “What’s been your favorite candy you’ve gotten tonight?”

  • “How long have you lived in the area?”

  • “We go to Parkway Church –do you go to a local church?”

  • “We’re praying for our neighborhood tonight—anything we could pray for your family about?”

  • “Thanks for stopping by—we hope you guys have a safe and fun night!”

If you're staying in

  • “That’s such a great costume! Let me guess, you are ___!”

  • “Hi! We’re the [last name] family—are you from this neighborhood?”

  • “Do you guys usually do trick-or-treating here, or is this your first year in this area?”

  • “Do you live in this neighborhood, or just here visiting?”

  • [If from the neighborhood]: “How long have you been in the neighborhood?"

  • [If not from the neighborhood]: “What area of town do you live in?”

  • “How old are your kids? Ours are [ages].”

  • “What school do your kids go to?”

  • “What’s the best costume you’ve spotted on your walk?”

  • “We’re praying over the neighborhoods we walk through tonight—can we pray for anything for you?”

Prayer Prompts

If You're Going Out

  • Pray for eyes to see — that God would highlight families or individuals who may be lonely or searching for hope.

  • Pray for courage — to step into conversations and not shy away from opportunities to encourage others.

  • Pray for unity — that your family or group would model love and joy as you walk together.

  • Pray for divine appointments — that God would align your path with people He wants you to meet.

  • Pray for lasting impact — that relationships formed tonight would continue beyond this night and open doors for the gospel.

If You're Staying In

  • Pray for every doorstep moment — that each child and parent who comes by would feel God’s love in the welcome and warmth they receive.

  • Pray for meaningful conversations — that quick chats at the door would open doors for future relationships.

  • Pray for boldness — to share about Jesus naturally if the opportunity arises.

  • Pray over your home — that it would shine as a place of light, joy, and peace in the neighborhood.

  • Pray for seeds to be planted — that small acts of kindness tonight would grow into eternal fruit.

Sharing the gospeL

Our hope and prayer is that casual conversation becomes a doorway for the Gospel to be shared clearly and effectively. Use this template to see how the Gospel can be shared simply and organically and check out the link below to find more resources.

Example of How to Share the Gospel

Beginning

"Let there be Light"
In the beginning, God Said, “Let there be Light” and the world was created to be in  right relationship with God perfectly within His will for humanity.

Broken

Sin is Darkness
Instead of following God’s perfect will, humans chose their own way. The Bible calls this sin. Sin is what brings darkness into the world and into our lives. Because of sin, every human is broken and separated from God.

Believe

Jesus is Light of the World
God sent His Son, Jesus, as the Light of the World to defeat the darkness of sin. He died in the place of sinners, taking on the justice we deserved. Jesus was crucified, buried, and raised to life, overcoming death itself. When we believe in Jesus, our sin is fully forgiven.

Become

Let Your Light Shine
When we believe in Jesus, we  become new and brought back into relationship with God. No longer trapped in darkness, we are re-purposed to love others and to let our light shine—showing the world how good God is.

share your story.
